Business in the Community Cymru Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water Wellbeing at Work Award Winner 2019: South Wales Police
South Wales Police is the Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water Wellbeing at Work Award winner after claiming the title at The Wales Responsible Business Awards 2019.
The health and wellbeing of its 5,000 staff are priorities for South Wales Police, which recognises that, in order to provide the best service to its communities, the organisation needs to look after its employees. The purpose of South Wales Police’s winning project was to improve the health, wellbeing and attendance of officers and staff through engagement, process improvement, investment via resourcing, training and development, ownership and support.
The £1m programme is a key component of the Chief Constable’s delivery plan and has thus far recovered more than 41,000 officer hours in the past year. However, the benefits reach far wider than that, based on the feedback of how invested people feel as a result of the force’s health and wellbeing initiatives. Numerous initiatives, from appointing a mental health nurse and promoting mental health champions, to introducing the Move More challenge and training staff as running fitness coaches make up a far-reaching programme that promotes and supports the benefits of mental and physical activities.
The ongoing programme has:
- reduced absenteeism and reduced long-term sickness absence, improving the morale and wellbeing of staff
- created role models and mentors within the force
