Today, Business in the Community Cymru – The Prince’s Responsible Business Network – announced that Peter Perry, CEO of Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, will take on a new role as the chair of the charity’s Wales Leadership Board in January 2021. He takes over from Stephen Hughes, (then Chief Executive of Principality Building Society) who stepped down from the role in February 2020.
Founded almost 40 years ago, Business in the Community (BITC) is dedicated to challenging companies to be more responsible in their impact on communities and the planet. Alongside its work on issues such as race, gender, the environment and employment, BITC launched the National Business Response Network (NBRN) this year as a way for business to directly support communities impacted by the fallout from COVID-19.
Peter was appointed Chief Executive Officer in April 2020, having worked for Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water for more than 20 years. Peter was the Managing Director from 2017 after four years as Chief Operating Officer. With a civil engineering background, Peter started his career as an apprentice, and has also held a position as Chief Operating Officer for United Utilities Operational Services (UUOS).
Peter Perry, Chief Executive Officer at Welsh Water said: “I am delighted to be taking up the post of Chair of Business in the Community Cymru, which is such a respected organisation. Its goals to create skilled and inclusive workforces, to build thriving communities and to drive innovation for the benefit of the planet, are closely aligned with what we aim to achieve at Welsh Water.
“COVID-19和更广泛的sustaina的持续影响bility issues are having a real impact on people’s lives and our future prosperity. I look forward to supporting other businesses and partners from different sectors to come together so that we make a lasting, meaningful and positive difference to the communities we serve and the environment in our care.”
Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water is the only not for profit water company in England and Wales, supplying most of Wales and some adjoining parts of England with water and sewerage services. It is a long-standing member of Business in the Community, and recently announced its 30-year vision and plan, ‘Welsh Water 2050’ to embed responsible practices across organisational strategy. This vision is set within the policy context of the Welsh Government’s Wellbeing of Future Generations Act (Wales) 2015 and Environment Act (Wales) 2015.
Sue Husband, Wales Director at Business in the Community, said: “We are excited to bring Peter’s expertise and experience to the Board of BITC Cymru. Peter’s leadership, environmental conscience, and commitment to inclusion and social mobility mirror the priorities of BITC’s Responsible Business Map™, and our ambition to build back responsibly from the pandemic. In working alongside the head of one of Wales’ largest and most innovative employers, we hope to expand the reach of The Prince’s Responsible Business Network in Wales at a crucial time.”
